Chris Childers

The Gulf Coast Athletic Club opened its November 14, 2023 meeting in the Clubhouse at Craft Farms Golf Resort at 7:00pm. President George Autrey welcomed the crowd of 59 attendees while announcing another great Speaker. It’s our last meeting for the Calendar Year with our “Senior Bowl” meeting up in late January 2024. New members and guests were introduced and welcomed.

The Prolific Pigskin Prognosticator contest, or Office Football Pool, only has 2 weeks left and there’s a new Sheriff in town, well, maybe temporary, we’ll see. Todd Lamb or Lamborghini sits atop the Leaderboard, a mere 2 points ahead of Randy Harkins and our season-long leader Fletchakl. With 11 within striking distance, can Lamborghini take us all for a ride?? Maybe so or…

In the place of Gulf Shores Athletic Director Paul Wilson, GS Board of Education President and FB Game PA Announcer Kevin Corcoran gave the Gulf Shores High School Dolphins report. Football is now 12-0. Dolphins are still ranked #1 in 5A. They will be travelling to Headland to play in the third round of the AHSAA Playoffs this Friday. If successful, Round 4 is back in Gulf Shores.

A few facts about our awesome GSHS Football team, Offense is averaging 40 points per game and Defense 9.1 with 4 Shutouts. A great statistic is if the Offense had not scored a single point all season, the Dolphins would still be 9-3. An incredible stat for a Fearsome “D”. The Cheer Squad has placed well in competition, Boys Swimming placed #1 in Sectionals and Girls were 2nd. Both will go to State. Girls Basketball is great with all 5 Starters back. Wrestling is solid. Last year, all 14 Classes from GSHS qualified for State and finished 3rd. In fact, last year, every GSHS Dolphin team, except Boys Basketball, qualified for State. Go, Dolphins!!!

Team Reports and the Crying Towel were again handled with deft precision by Dec McClellan, and in all fairness, the Crying Towel wasn’t even close. John Boller “graciously” accepted the Crying Towel for Auburn’s failure to show up against New Mexico State. WHO? “Auburn Tigers Freeze Up against NMS.”

Our returning speaker was Chris Childers. This guy is incredible as he does more in one day than most people. He’s a longtime radio host and sportscaster for ESPN and SiriusXM. He currently co-hosts “Full Ride” with Rick Neuheisel as well as “SEC Today” on SiriusXM. He also is a Graduate Student at the University of Alabama. He was here in 2021 and it’s great to get him back.

Childers is a great fan of the Army-Navy game and declared the end of college football next year as we know it. All new conferences and a new playoff system for 2024, so much is changing. LSU Quarterback Daniel is very special, the best player in America, and should win the Heisman, but probably won’t. He continued to deliver great analytical commentary on College Football and listeners should tune into his programs as Mr. Childers knows his stuff. Look forward to having you back, Sir!!!

The 50-50 prize was awarded to the Club’s resident Tennessee fan, who barely dodged a Crying Towel.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40pm.

Our next program on January 29, 2024 will be ESPN Star and returning Speaker, Cole Cubelic.
